Q: How'd you get into photography?

A: In college, I wanted to be a music writer and critic; I joined the school newspaper and headed off to journalism school at University of Missouri. In my first semester I took a photography course thinking it would demystify the darkroom -- once I picked up a camera, there was no looking back. As important as the music medium was to me - photography just took over.

Q: What photograph of yours comes first to mind?

A: I'd been working at a small daily newspaper in Wyoming, The Riverton Ranger, and had enjoyed working solely in photography for several months after working in a dual role as a writer and photographer. The paper had always been run only in black and white. My last assignment, shot before moving away to marry and move to San Antonio with my wife, ran in color. It gave me such a spark to see my photo in color; the memory is mixed with the emotions of picking up and making other big changes at the same time.

Q: What's your favorite color?

A: Green, I think.

Q: Describe an image, taken by another photographer that inspires you.

A: There's a photo, taken by Nan Goldin, of a couple at a bar - they're reclining in a couch, and completely taken by each other - in that moment there's only them in the entire world. Nan's pictures have always inspired me; this shot, to me, is an example of a perfectly captured candid gem.

Q: Describe what are your most successful photos - which images satisfy you the most?

A: Nothing makes me happier than to be there and capture genuine, fleeting moments. So much of any event - but, especially weddings - is scheduled, scripted, and predicted - but the real moments are there. How can they not be? I delight in being there, experiencing them with you through my lens, and in providing the images to you so that those moments can live vividly with you over time.

Q. You have a degree in what?

A. I have a degree in Finance. And a day job in software. It doesn't matter - I see everything in pictures. I met Andre the week I purchased my first SLR - that was only the first clue that he and I were meant to be!

Q. What does photography mean to you?

A. All my life - as a kid and stuff - I'd get so frustrated. I'd get these great projects in my minds eye - all kinds of things: textiles, drawing, gardening, you name it. Everything I undertook just underwhelmed my expectations - the results didn't match up to the goal I had visualized. It didn't take long after picking up a camera to recognize that I was able to get so much closer to results I wanted with photography.

Q. What's your favorite color?

A. Red. Without a doubt. I love it so much - but I'm afraid of over doing it; so I only buy really special things in red. I think I have a single red accent piece in our home. My latest find is a fabulous pair of red patent mary janes with crazy high heals. I try to work them into every outfit!

Q. What would you tell a bride or other client before a photo shoot?

A. Relax! Be yourself!

Q. Do you cry at weddings?

A. No, but sometimes I have to snap myself out of it during toasts at the reception. I love, love, LOVE hearing the sweet well wishes and blessings that family and friends have for the couple.

Q. Does Finance influence your photography?

A. Hmmm... Not directly. But I do think that the concept of Time Value of Money applies wholly to photographs. Stay with me here - I won't make you do any math!

You know the whole banker thing? That money invested today will accrue in greater and greater value the longer it's in the bank? I think you can take the concept right over to photographs: a meaningful image captured today has a certain value which just increases with each passing year.

Think of how you catch your breath when you find a shoe box of photos from years ago. Personally, it nearly stops my heart now when I look back on photographs from my own wedding, or of my children as tiny new babes.

Sebastian’s parents invited Andre back for another photo session – his original is HERE. This photo is one of my favorites – While I love, love LOVE to play with artistic retouching of images, in my heart I most often feel that representing you the way we were together is best — that said, when I found this image while I automatically saw it in this way:
